Mushroom pet safety

Which mushrooms are safe for dogs and cats — and which aren't. Cultivated gourmet species like oyster, lion's mane, king oyster, shiitake, and chestnut are generally considered non-toxic to pets when cooked plain. Raw mushrooms, anything wild, and almost anything seasoned (garlic, onion, butter, soy) are not.

The biggest danger isn't the cultivated mushrooms you grow at home — it's the unknown ones in your yard. In Canada, death cap (Amanita phalloides) and false morels (Gyromitra) appear in BC, Ontario, and Atlantic provinces every year. If your dog or cat eats any mushroom from outside, treat it as an emergency: call your vet or the Pet Poison Helpline immediately and bring a sample of the mushroom if you can.

What follows are variety-specific guides covering the cultivated species most people grow or buy at the grocery store, plus the seasoning warnings that matter more than the mushroom itself.
